Americans in Bear Country
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (11 May, 2000)
Author: Missy Moore
Average review score:

Thoroughly enjoyed
I am thoroughly impressed with the author's ability to show us a detailed picture of everyday life in the Russian hinterlands. I never imagined people could still live that way in this day and age. We (Americans) are very much spoiled by what we consider "our necessities" in life. The emotions and visuals this book brought to me were so clear and real. I thought the last chapter written by the author's husband was a very nice touch. We have the story from both sides of this very adventurous couple! I was a little nervous about having to read about the Russian government/politial issues in this book, but was quite surprised and pleased to see it wasn't like any other book I've read about Russia. It is about the daily life of the everyday common person (or Americanski)in Pavlovo, Russia. Thank you for sharing your story, Missy Moore!

High School Librarian sees value in primary sources.
What a wonderful narrative of a present day adventure! Students often need material on Russia but are put off by lengthy books that are heavy on history and very short on interesting daily life. This book is perfect. It is like listening to a favorite relative tell about the trials of the depression and how it influenced all that came after.....

A must read, from one who has lived 7 yrs outside the USA
This is an invaluable book for those who complain about living in the USA, those interested in human nature, Russian travel or culture, or book lovers in general.

The most insightful comments about human nature: property that is owned by everyone is not kept up by anyone and its corollary, property that is owned by everyone is free for the taking by anyone. Her examples are poignant, especially her attempt to set an example.

Missy's love and concern for the ordinary people of the Russian hinterland overcame the deprivations and primitive conditions where they lived for 15 months. The isolation was intense, but expressed only in the context of overcoming it. The Russians responded to Missy with warmth that was in stark contrast to the very cold climate.

Not only did I greatly enjoy the book, but since I was away when it arrived, I had to wait for my husband and a friend (who is going to Russia) to finish the book first. Our friend immediately bought a copy for his wife.

The Asian Diet: Get Slim and Stay Slim the Asian Way

Average review score:

Creative, Practical, Easy Asian Secrets
Nutrition and creativity combined in this useful presentation of easy-to-make Asian recipes. Beautifully and personally written, backed by hard science.

Delicious and easy low-fat Asian recipes
Tran's book was an unexpected treat. These are not exotic or complicated Asian recipes, but they produce good tasting Asian dishes, that are either naturally low-fat, or adapted (less emphasis on protein, reduced oil when possible, the use of low-fat coconut milk, for example.) The ingredients are readily available in most supermarkets. There are menu plans available which promise weight loss, but I just use the recipes. (The peanut sauce for the satays is great--and I even modified it more with lower-fat peanut butter.) These are nice recipes for introducing one's family to Asian cuisine--particularly Thai and Vietnamese. I also enjoyed the photographs of Tran and her family, which personalized the book for me.

Delicious, easy introduction to elegant Asian meals
In her second cookbook, Diana My Tran gives the health-conscious person, who may not be familiar with Asian delicacies, the scientific facts and the culinary guidance to prepare beautiful, healthy and quick dishes. Calories, proteins, carbs and more are given for each item, and menus suggested for continued good eating. This book combines a creative but sensible approach to eating Asian with a personal glimpse at an extraordinary chef.

Blind Obedience: A True Story of Family Loyalty and Murder in South Georgia
Published in Hardcover by Mercer University Press (October, 2000)
Author: Bill Boyd
Average review score:

WOW! Great book!
I really enjoyed this book! I couldn't put it down - I read it in 2 days. TRUE CRIME is my reading of choice but to have it take place so close to my hometown of Douglas is unusual! I live about 20 miles from the burial place of most of the people in this book. This book is really entertaining for history buffs wanting to know what life was like in turn-of-the-century rural Georgia including Coffee County and Lowndes County. Back then trials were the biggest source of entertainment available. The book mostly takes place in Jacksonville, Broxton, Ambrose, Hahira, and Valdosta, Georgia. REALLY INTERESTING READING!

My Grandfather Knew Them
The book, Blind Obedience, is truly a well-written story. I grew up very close to the site of the Rawlins & Carter farms near Val-Del Road a few miles east of Hahira, Georgia. My grandfather knew the families involved. A few years after the trials, my Uncle Ivey Johnson bought the old Carter place and lived there for several years. Anyone living in South Georgia should especially be interested in reading this text. Any book that I can read in slightly more than one days time has got to be good. Bill Boyd deserves praise for his writing efforts.

Storytelling at its best
Bill Boyd has taken the forgotten hostilities of two families of the late 1800s/early 1900s and brought it back to life as if it were any modern day, headline-grabbing saga. His exploration of the characters' motivations and actions makes one feel as if Boyd were a first hand witness to this intriguing part of south Georgia's rich history. The tale of two misguided families is as fascinating as it is tragic. Take the trip back in time and experience a piece of forgotten human tragedy so deftly told by Boyd.

Cold Hit

Author: Christopher G. Moore

Another Wonderful Case With Vinnie Calvino!
"Cold Hit" is one of the best books in the Vincent Calvino series and I guarentee that when you pick it up, it definately WON'T be easy to put down!
Vinnie is his usual lovable, cynical-but-caring PI struggling to make a living in Bangkok and live in that unique world where Thai and farang meet. The painful events he has happen to him in the first chapter when he's merely off to deliver a birthday card to a bargirl are the best introduction to both the story and Calvino himself. As expected, the other characters, some based on real expats in Bangkok, are just as believable and just as easy to love or loathe or sometimes do both at the same time; this is indeed a brilliant writing characteristic of Christopher G. Moore. If this book proceeds for you the way it did for me, you'll wipe it out within a day or two but if you're anywhere in Thailand when you do, you might be in a bar, sipping a beer or some Mekhong and feel as though you've transported yourself into the heart of Moore's writing and that Vinnie will be joining you soon for a whiskey himself. If you want fun, fantastic literary work and the most enjoyable means to learn about Thailand, get this book lao-lao. You'll love it!

Brings Thailand to life
Thailand is a country with many faces and Moore is an artist who paints fascinating portraits. Though I am generally not a fan of deceive stories I am hooked on Moore's Calvino series. Moore has very intriguing way of commenting on life through his characters. Cold Hit is definitely one of Moore's finer works.

Cold Hit
Like a great vintage wine Moore just gets better and better. His latest in the Calvino series is a great place to begin your probable addiction to his books.I can only warn you that after reading a few of Moores books you may find yourself on a plane to Bangkok and i guarentee you will be forwarned and better prepared for your adventure than from reading any guide book.

Conan the Hunter
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Tor Books (January, 1994)
Author: Sean A. Moore
Average review score:

Crom!
Sean A. Moore has done a fabulous job of capturing Conan's charater and has written a riveting story. You won't be disappointed with the latest of Conan's exploits. Robert E. Howard would be proud of this one...

A great Adventure!
I just finished reading Conan the Hunter, and I must say it was a great tale! I loved it! It was filled with edge-of-the-seat action, and Moore portrayed Conan's character more realistically than any others I have read. I especially found it refreshing to read that Conan made several mistakes in the story, and had to deal with dire consequences, as opposed to the many other stories where he seems more like a flawless machine in battle. Each of the many enemies and creatures he encountered were all very original and easily came to life from among the pages. I was also able to get deeper into the story because there was no love story incorporated to get tangled up with. Just pure adventure! I anticipate reading Conan and the Shaman's Curse and Conan and the Grim Grey God in the near future. Moore is a brilliant author of Conan! I look forward to seeing more of his work!

A Great Escape
If you are looking for an intellectually stimulating book you can use to sound intelligent at your next cocktail party, do not read this book. If you want to spend months reading a grossly over-written multi-volume fantasy series that involves characters traveling around the world a few dozen times doing the same thing over and over, do not read this book. If, however, you are looking for a quick and rousing read, this book fits the bill. Fast paced, well written, with a good mix of action, intrigue and old fashioned blood and guts. Its great.

Dogs Deserve Dialogue: Rover Should Hang on Your Words NOT on Your Leash
Published in Paperback by Tyke Publishing (01 January, 2000)
Authors: Judy Moore, Fay Golson, and Jim Moore

Dogs Deserve Dialogue...by Judy Moore
I have read Judy's book, seen her video, met her when she came to Milwaukee in 2001 to work with two dogs, and this year in May 2002 when she gave a wonderful presentation at the Wisconsin Humane Society talking about some of her successes which are also mentioned in her book. She did a live demonstration and as a volunteer at the facility, I received so much positive feedback from attendees. The book has helped friends of mine who recently acquired dogs and one person in particular refers to Judy's book as his "bible" when working with his dog. As a dog walker, Judy's book has helped me work with the dogs I walk at the shelter. The book is so worthwhile to every dog owner, both new and those who have had dogs, and this book should be associated on Amazon with other dog-related books (whether training or pleasure reading).
Thank you.

This is an exceptional book.
DOGS DESERVE DIALOGUE & Judy Moore's Video are exceptional and truly in the dog's language. Our German shepherd had been kept in a little kennel for breeding. They had two other dogs that were allowed in the house and car. We were given Jazmine at 3 1/2 years old. She hated dogs and people and was unmanagable. She was excellent in every other way. We have 11 dog books and none of that training helped us. We got Judy's book and tape and started working with her. Jazmine had to have a serious surgery and was quite ill for a month. Judy wrote us an email and asked how we were doing. We were very discouraged. With Judy's encouragement we started training again. Immediately, Jazmine picked up where we left off. She would behave responsibility with constant praise. This would have been impossible without Judy's book and tape. Judy Moore is an exceptional person, gives generous help and support, and is constantly wanting to help all animals. This is the only dog book you need for training. We suggest you get the tape as it is quite helpful. The dogs learn very quickly and without being stressed.

Dogs Deserve Dialogue
I own a very high spirited dog. When I first started walking him as a young puppy, we were both attacked several times by dogs that were not on leashes. Because of this, my dog has what I can only call Social anxiety. He is frightened of any new experience. Instead of cowering, he became aggressive. I have trained dogs using a variety of methods over the years, but only this book was able to help me help my dog. It inspired me to also join Judy in a weekend training session. Between the book, the video and Judy's help, my dog is able to handle his fears and even overcome some of them. It is not a quick fix, it requires a relationship with your dog. The work is gratifying and you will not believe what a wonderful dog you own!

Food Rules: The Stuff You Munch, Its Crunch, Its Punch and Why You Sometimes Lose Your Lunch
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (August, 2001)
Authors: Bill Haduch, Rick Stromoski, and Lisa Moore
Average review score:

Great fun for kids
What a marvelous book. It explains the functions of digestion in a fun way. It has a couple of "fart" and "poop" jokes which are entirely appropriate to a book about food and nutrition, and allows a kid to hear a little "naughty" joke, but the clean kind of naughtiness that a kid can laugh at, instead of the "dirty" jokes that they are probably being exposed to.

Haduch rules!
As a kid who likes science and math, I think Haduch rules! I have read several of Mr. Haduch's science books and they are always funny and full of good information. I even used his book on tornadoes for a school project (and got an "A".)The food book is very funny while telling you about science and how your body uses food. I hope he does a book on dinosaurs.

Science and nutrition made fun for kids.
Now maybe kids will eat what's good for them! This book is one of the rare kids' books that addresses kids as people to be talked to and entertained....not to be talked down to or preached at. As a mom who has kids interested in science....and off-the-wall humor...I appreciate a book that combines both. Thanks!

Airport Operations
Published in Textbook Binding by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1984)
Authors: Norman, Moore, C. Ashford, M. Stanton, H. P. Martin Stanton, and Clifton A. Moore
Average review score:

A valuable book for any transport researcher
This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.

Very comphrensive to all areas of airport operations
This book is an excellent text to all airport related personnels. I found it's particularly useful to people working in airport and/or aviation management who want to gain more in-depth understanding to all areas of airport operations. This book can also serve as in-house classroom training text for airline personnel. A highly recommended one!

A very complete, accurate, and timely explanation of Airport
This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato

Flame: A Heated Romance Without Him Burns Vigorously Out of Control
Published in Paperback by Lift Every Voice (September, 2001)
Author: Stephanie Perry Moore
Average review score:

Wonderful chrisitan novel
Flame is the love story of Bacall and Rory. Bacall is just graduating from college, and lands a job at a record company. Rory becomes a big time singer, which makes Rory Jealous of all the attention he gets from other women. Bacall tries not to let lust take over her Chrisitan values, while dating Rory, but finds out that it's not always so easy. This is a good book for all people in a relationship to read.

Sizzling like beef bacon
Flame by Stephanie Perry Moore

Bacall Lee prayed a selfish prayer asking God to send her a guy who's handsome, popular, charming and lovable. That prayer went from her mouth straight to God's ears. Awhile later Bacall was at a party with friends, where she meets Rory Kerry. Bacall thinks Rory is the one, tall, dark, handsome and bald. One night temptation shows its head. Will Bacall continue to keep God first, and save herself for her husband? Or push her beliefs aside and taste temptation.

Flame was a wonderful uplifting read; it is categorized for young adults, but everyone will get something from Flame. I closed the book with a challenge, to get to know God. I want to feel that burning passion Bacall and the Rev. Brandon Lee talked about throughout Flame. This book is a page turner you need to read.

For Hearing People Only: Answers to the Most Commonly Asked Questions About the Deaf Community
Published in Hardcover by M S M Productions Ltd (September, 1993)
Authors: Matthew S. Moore and Linda Levitan
Average review score:

now hear this!
as a hearing student just now entering the Deaf world, i found much of this book hard to read. i didn't want to be guilty by association of many of the prejudices, assumptions, & opressive acts that were described. i was saddened to think that the rather negative bias (though undoubtedly deserved) towards hearing people represented in this book might block me in developing many true relationships with Deaf people. i've, fortunately, found that not to be the case. the Deaf community is much like any other diverse community. the book did definitely help me to open my eyes to many things i was ignorant of & i even had to admit some stereotypical things about myself. i reccomend it to everyone despite their level of participation with this dynamic community.

A MUST Reading for everyone working with the deaf!
This is a wonderful book with more information than you can imagine! I require this for my students in my sign classes because it offers more information than I can teach!

A must read for anyone wanting to understand Deaf Culture
This book, a collection of 60 essays from "Deaf Life" magazine, contains a thoughtful, and sometimes humorous, look at Deaf Culture, and the hearing worlds misconception of it. The book is well organized for easy reference. I find myself returning to it's many chapters often and discover a new insight every time! A great place to start on the journey to Deaf Awareness!
